What a playhouse is actually for
A playhouse is a small structure a child can call theirs. Tucked into the corner of a garden or set up in a playroom, it gives them somewhere to be in charge of, which is a different thing from another toy. An outdoor cubby house and a fabric play tent do the same job in different ways, and which one suits you comes down to space, weather and how permanent you want it to be.
What children get out of one
- Imaginative play. A playhouse is a stage. Children act out running a household, going on an expedition, keeping shop. That kind of play is how a lot of early thinking gets practised.
- Time outside. An outdoor playhouse is a reason to go out and stay out, which is most of the argument for one.
- Playing with other children. Playhouses tend to become the place everyone ends up, and sharing a small space is its own lesson.
- Something of their own. Children take a surprising amount of care over a space they own, including tidying it, which is not true of the rest of the house.
The three shapes it comes in
An outdoor playhouse or cubby house is moulded plastic or timber, sits in one place, and is built to stay out in the weather. Ours is 110 x 90 x 95 cm, UV resistant and water resistant, with a sunroof, opening windows and peepholes, and it is recommended from 24 months.
A play tent is fabric on a frame. It folds into a bag, moves between rooms and goes in the car. The teepee is cotton canvas on unpainted knotless pine at 120 x 120 x 160 cm; the castle tent is polyester on a lightweight frame; the tent and tunnel set is two tents and two connecting tunnels that clip together.
A playpen or play yard is the version for the youngest children, where the point is a defined, padded space rather than a hideaway. The pop-up playpen has a safety lock and a removable anti-UV canopy; the play yard is 150 x 180 cm on an all-steel frame with padded bars and breathable mesh walls.
How to choose between them
- Space. Measure before you buy, and leave clearance around anything a child swings or climbs on. Every product page gives its assembled size.
- Material. Timber and moulded plastic last outdoors and stay put. Fabric is lighter, cheaper and packs away, but it wants bringing in.
- Safety. Look at the age range and the weight limit rather than the photograph, check the edges and the fastenings, and keep young children supervised.
- What they are actually into. A castle, a teepee or a plain cubby house are the same object to an adult and completely different ones to a four year old.

Start with the age, not the picture
Every product page on this site carries the age range and, where there is one, the weight limit the supplier publishes. Those two numbers do more to narrow a shortlist than anything else: a play yard is for a child who is not yet walking confidently, a teepee is for one who wants to be out of sight, and a 1.52 m trampoline with an enclosure is a different purchase again.
Then the space
Measure before you order. The cubby house is 110 x 90 x 95 cm, the teepee is 120 x 120 x 160 cm high, the play yard covers 150 x 180 cm, and the A frame swing set needs 3.5 m by 1.8 m with clearance around it. Anything a child swings on or falls from wants more room than its own footprint.
Indoors, outdoors, or both
Fabric packs away and moves between rooms; moulded plastic stays where you put it and takes the weather. The cubby house is UV and water resistant, the pop-up playpen has a removable anti-UV canopy for outdoor use, and the tents are happier under cover when nobody is in them.
What needs fixing to something
The swings do. The saucer swing and the rope swing both hang from a branch, a beam or a frame, and the strength of what you hang them from matters more than the swing. The A frame set comes with four ground stakes for the same reason. If you are not sure a branch will take it, it will not.
Learning toys
The telescope, microscope, robotics kit and science set are for the age where a child wants to work something out rather than be shown. Each one lists what is in the box, because half the value of a kit is whether it is complete.
